The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation has announced the commencement of the Girne Cloverleaf Junction construction at the intersection of the Lefkoşa-Girne Highway and the Lefkoşa Northern Ring Road.
The project, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, will begin on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, and is scheduled for completion by April 1, 2025.
During the construction period, significant traffic adjustments will be implemented to ensure the flow of vehicles.
Drivers travelling from Girne to Lefkoşa will be redirected to the Lefkoşa Northern Ring Road and will be able to access the city center or Gönyeli via the Dikmen Near East University Cloverleaf Junction.
Traffic along the Lefkoşa-Girne Highway, particularly in the section where the new junction will be built, will be reduced to a single lane.
In addition to these measures, improvement works at the Gönyeli Yenikent Roundabout and the Lefkoşa-Güzelyurt Highway Gönyeli Entrance commenced this morning.
These adjustments aim to provide alternative routes and reduce congestion while construction is underway.
The Girne Cloverleaf Junction is part of the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard Junction Improvement Project, which was approved in 2016 but delayed due to budgetary constraints and other challenges.
The Ministry has decided to expedite the project and begin work on the Gönyeli intersections immediately, with the Highways Department tasked with completing the improvements as quickly as possible.
Once completed, the new junction will provide direct access between the Lefkoşa-Girne Highway and the Lefkoşa Northern Ring Road, facilitating smoother travel across the country.
Drivers travelling from the east to the west or vice versa will be able to bypass city traffic, saving both time and fuel.
Additionally, vehicles heading to Girne will no longer need to navigate the Gönyeli Roundabout, as the new junction will offer a more efficient route.
The Ministry emphasized the importance of safety during the construction period and has coordinated with the General Directorate of Police to implement necessary precautions.
Drivers are urged to follow traffic signs, drive cautiously in construction zones, and allow extra time for their journeys, particularly during peak hours.
