Work on the Pile Yiğitler road progressing
Date Added: 26 October 2023

Work on the construction of the Yiğitler-Pile road is progressing; it was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

Progress has reached the disputed area on the Çayhan plateau where scuffles broke out in August between Turkish Cypriot authorities and UN peacekeepers who attempted to prevent workers from going ahead with the project.

The Turkish Cypriot side clearly states that the road is a humanitarian project which will ease access of Turkish Cypriots living in Pile to and from the TRNC.

Turkish Cypriot residents of the mixed village located in the UN controlled buffer zone that cross to the TRNC daily for work, health, school, and other reasons have been waiting for the construction of the road since early 2000.

Currently all traffic from the village to the TRNC is conducted through the British Bases in Dheklia.

An agreement was struck on the construction of the road last month.
