Zero Waste Collection Marathon

A “Zero Waste Collection Marathon” is being organized under the auspices of the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, in collaboration with the Youth Federation.

The marathon which will take place in May aims to increase environmental awareness and create consciousness on littering.

In the spirit of environmental consciousness and sustainability, the “Zero Waste Collection Marathon” is kicking off in collaboration with the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, and the Youth Federation.

This comprehensive event aims to encourage people from all walks of life to work together in combating environmental pollution and to raise awareness about the environment.

The details of the event were announced through a press conference on Wednesday held at the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment.

Speaking during the conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, emphasized the importance of the environment and the upcoming project.

Highlighting the issue of waste and associated environmental pollution in the country, Ataoğlu conveyed the ministry’s significant efforts and intensive work in this regard.

Ataoğlu also mentioned that the Environmental Department conducts simultaneous environmental checks with non-governmental organizations in every district.

“We will symbolically celebrate June 5 as World Environment Day. We want our country to reach the desired environmental standards. I thank our youth for their value for the environment. I hope that this initiative we are starting will set an example,” he said.

Mustafa Özbilgehan, Head of the Youth Federation, stated that with this project, they aim to bring all young people together and create awareness for environmental consciousness.

Özbilgehan shared the details of the marathon.

During the one-month marathon, teams of four will compete every Saturday in May to collect more waste for recycling.

The Zero Waste Garbage Collection Marathon will take place in Girne on May 4, Lefkoşa on May 11, Gazimağusa on May 18, and Lefke followed by Güzelyurt on May 25.

There will be three separate categories, the top two teams that collect the most waste, the team that recycles the most waste, and the team that collects the most glass will be awarded.

The total prize amount for the three categories will be 40,000 TL.

At the end of the event, a prize ceremony will be held on June 5, World Environment Day, to reward the winners.

Registration will be carried out through the Youth Federation.
