Exhumation works at Atlılar Martyrs’ cemetery

President Erin Tatar examined the exhumation works being carried out by the Committee on Missing Persons at the Atlılar Martyrs’ cemetery.

Speaking here the president said that the Turkish Cypriot’s owe their independence, freedom and state to the martyrs.

The exhumations initiated by the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) to identify the remains found in the village of Atlılar are continuing and President Ersin Tatar visited the Atlılar village and examined the excavations on site.

The President was briefed by Gülseren Baranhan, Coordinator of the Committee on Missing Persons, and Archaeologist Çınar Karal team leader of the Atlılar excavation.

It was noted that in 2015, all 88 martyrs were exhumed in Muratağa and most of them were identified.

In Atlılar, 31 martyrs have been exhumed so far in the exhumation work that began in July of last year and that the identification process of 6 still remain, adding that the work here will be completed in a few months.

President Ersin Tatar during his visit reminded that the CMP made great efforts to excavate the Atlılar Martyrs’ cemetery and wished patience to the families of the martyrs.

Tatar said, “Here, we see the pain of the Turkish Cypriots once again. With your efforts, work is being carried out so that everyone can have a separate grave and pray for their loved ones”.

President Tatar also stated that the work is very difficult and detailed.

“The Turkish Cypriots have come this far by suffering such hardships on these lands. Today, if we have independence, freedom and statehood, we owe it all to these people, may their places be in heaven, may their souls rest in peace,” said Tatar.
