President Ersin Tatar who attended the meeting of former mayors organized by the Presidency, stated that the work and services of mayors constitute an important basis in the Turkish Cypriot peoples national struggle.

Touching upon the issue of the Local Government Reforms regarding the merger of municipalities, Tatar emphasized that the strengthening of municipalities will contribute to the development and progress of the country.

Also touching upon the Cyprus problem, Tatar stated that with the support of the Republic of Türkiye, they told the world about the solution based on the cooperation of 2 equal sovereign states.

Pointing to the recent developments between Türkiye and Greece, Tatar said that in his phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, he confirmed that there was no change in the Cyprus policy.

Stating that until a solution is found in Cyprus, cooperation can be carried out with South Cyprus on many issues, but that the Greek Cypriot side does not want to cooperate, Tatar said “The island of Cyprus should be connected to the mainland for the solution of the energy problem, instead of Greece, which is distant and risky. It can be switched to the interconnected system in the European Union via Türkiye, which is closer, safer and cheaper. This system will serve humanity, the environment and nature. We proposed this to the Greek Cypriot side”.

During the meeting President Tatar also evaluated the sale of properties to foreigners.

Reminding that the sale of properties to foreigners is subject to certain rules, restricted by numbers and passes through a security investigation, Tatar stated that necessary arrangements should be made to prevent sales made via contract and ones that are not reported to the title deed office.
